Dear Friends,
what is the secret behind writing Christmas songs?
Well, you should have a few musical skills at least, furthermore a soft spot for kitsch and romanticism and the snakelike intuition of a huckster. Then you might be able to write one great Christmas song. And once you did it you should leave it at that because it can’t get any better (or worse?). Those who tried terribly failed, leaving nothing but a trace of horrible and defamatory ditties. In my juvenile cockiness I presume that Alphaville have already written their one and only Christmas song. Hence the only way to make for some diversion is covering some other person’s great Christmas song. And that’s what we did for this year’s holiday season.
It is a song of hope and optimism mixed up with melancholy and nostalgia, perfect for present times. Yes, there had been better times and yes, the times they are a changing, and yes, once this strange year will be done, nothing will be like it was before. But… there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, promise. Cause life goes on and life always wins. And light always wins over darkness. That is what Christmas is all about and that is what we all here love so much about it.
Sincere and heartfelt Christmas greetings from us to you. And let there be light!
