Liebe Mitbürger,
am Abend des 14. Juni attackieren in Grevesmühlen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern 8 Jugendliche aus einer 20-köpfigen Gruppe heraus ein acht- und ein zehnjähriges Mädchen aus Ghana. Das achtjährige Mädchen wird getreten, als es mit seinem Roller an einem der Jugendlichen vorbeifahren will. Ihr herbeieilender Vater wird verletzt.

Ich bin selber Vater von sieben Kindern und ich frage alle Väter und Mütter in Deutschland: Was fühlt ihr, wenn ihr so etwas lest? Ist solch feiges und erbärmliches Verhalten Ausdruck eines Deutschlands, in dem wir leben wollen? Ist das Ausdruck deutscher Mentalität, deutscher Empfindsamkeit, deutschen Charakters? Und dieser Vorfall ist ja nur die Spitze des Eisbergs. Es rollt eine Lawine der Boshaftigkeit durch unser Land, eine nie für möglich gehaltene Stimmung der Niedertracht, ausgeübt von einem Gesindel, das einzig in Überzahl seine Feigheit überwindet und nur dann aus seinen Rattenlöchern kriecht, wenn es Morgenluft wittert. Es gibt Menschen, die so sind und dann gibt es Menschen, die sind nicht so.

Es wird Zeit, daß wir bekennen, und zwar eindeutig, öffentlich, und ohne wenn und aber, auf welcher Seite wir stehen wollen. In jedem von uns wohnt eine Stimme, die uns genau sagt, was gut und was böse ist, ganz unabhängig von unseren weltanschaulichen Überzeugungen. Sie ist nicht sehr laut und manchmal geht sie im Kampfeslärm des Alltags unter. Verharren wir ein paar Minuten in Stille und lauschen. Um dann zu handeln…

Dear fellow-citizens,
on the evening of 14 June in Grevesmühlen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, eight youths from a group of 20 attacked an eight-year-old and a ten-year-old girl from Ghana. The eight-year-old girl is kicked, when she tries to pass one of the youths on her scooter. Her father, who rushes over, is also injured.

I am the father of seven children and I ask all fathers and mothers in Germany: How do you feel when you read something like this? Is such cowardly and heinous behaviour an expression of the kind of Germany we want to live in? Is this an expression of German mentality, German sensitivity, German character? And this incident is just the tip of the iceberg. An avalanche of malice is rolling through our country, a mood of infamy never thought possible, exercised by a mob that only overcomes its cowardice when it is outnumbered and only crawls out of its rat holes when it smells the morning air. There are people who are like this and then there are people who are not.

It is time that we confess, clearly, publicly and without ifs and buts, which side we want to be on. There is a voice inside each of us that tells us exactly what is good and what is bad, regardless of our ideological convictions. It is not very loud and sometimes it is drowned out in the battle noise of everyday life. Let’s stay in silence for a few minutes and listen. And then act…
